Hello all,
I'm here in hopes of getting some advice and perspective.
A little background on me:
My career is in the Information Assurance field (Computer Security) and I have been doing this for the last 11 years. Currently, I am tasked with performing Security Risk Management, but have experience in Digital Forensics, eDiscovery, Incident Response, Security & Network Architecture, as well as general IT skills.
I have a Bachelors of Arts in Economics, and a Masters of Science in Information Assurance (from accredited Colleges), as well as many industry certifications (I doubt these would factor in to attending Law School)
I am well regarded in my company and am paid well (I think).
The dilemma:
I've been struggling with deciding on whether to go to Law School (at night - still working full time) or to earn my Doctorate of Science in Information Assurance. I think I would like to go into Patent and Intellectual Property Law (assuming my Masters in Science is enough to satisfy those requirements).
On the other hand, I could pursue my Doctorate of Science in Information Assurance and then be eligible to teach at the college level (another interest of mine), and be able to place a "Dr." in front of my name (I jest of course).
The Law Degree would be financed by no one other than myself; the Doctorate in Information Assurance would be partially funded by my company (8k/year). I believe it takes 4 years to do a JD part time, while the DSc would take 3.
Here's the main point of my meandering post - Is it worth the investment in time and money (I am assuming ~100k for Law School, and ~40k for DSc) for the JD? Will my salary potential really increase a great deal?
Are there any other people who have a skill set in Cyber Security/Privacy and Law that could shed some light on the potential jobs out there that would allow me to span both fields?
Thank you for your time and help. I sincerely appreciate any information you could provide on this.
