Best Gift For an Incoming 1L First Year Law Student
I have a rather unusual question that I hope someone can help me with. A friend of mine is graduating from college with his 4-yr degree next month, and will then be entering law school as a first-year law student. I would like to get him a nice graduation present. Ideally it will be a gift that will be useful to him at law school. Any suggestions? Is there anything most first-year law school students need or want? Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated since I have no clue when it comes to appropriate gifts for law school students.
p.s. As far as a price range, I'm looking to spend up to a couple hundred dollars.

The obvious off-to-law-school gift is a copy of Black's Law Dictionary. That will only set you back about $60 though. There's some great law school necessities in this law school amazon shop as well.
I can't think of anything else that is unique to law school. A palm pilot might be nice to help keep track of classes and assignments. If your friend is going far away to law school you could get him something related to that (ie - A nice winter coat if he's going somewhere cold - good for interviews too.) Maybe a new suitcase for traveling?
Good luck with the shopping.

At the risk of sounding arrogant or like a braggart, I have several lawyers in my family, including both my parents. (They met in law school, so it makes sense.)
Anyway, I asked my aunt (also a lawyer) if I should get a Blacks and she was adamant, “don’t waste your money- you ask your mother if she ever used a legal dictionary in 3 years of school!” My mother agreed, but they are sisters…
I don’t think it is used very much and it is available in the library. As I am graduating this month and entering 1L next year I can mention things I would be happy to get.
I have spent about $100 on a wide variety of pre-law books. There are tons of ideas and rankings on Law School Learning Tools. I really liked Law School Confidential for its advice and am looking forward to reading The Law School Trip as soon as finals are over. Its supposed to be really funny. Also check out the top 10 law school books and Ivy Briefs Law Student Book Review.
Ok this is probably going to make me look like an idiot and REALLY green, but I am ready to turn in my jansport for a nice leather bag.
Also you can buy him a membership to the student division of the ABA.
Finally, a laptop is a must- perhaps you can just give him funds towards getting one. If you still want him to unwrap something the other gifts I suggested are pretty inexpensive.
I hope its not too late!
